Understanding the directory
Which cemeteries this guide brings together
This directory brings together municipal and church cemeteries, Jewish burial grounds and surviving historic sites. Cemetery sections and former churchyards are described according to their location and use; historic grounds are not automatically open to new burials.
Ohlsdorf, Öjendorf, Bergedorf, Altona Main Cemetery and Tonndorf have dedicated information websites. Other entries open compact profiles in this guide. In either case, the map and directory card open the same destination.
The cemetery and its administration office may have different addresses. Use the grounds’ address for your journey and the administration listed in the profile for burial rights, fees or a grave enquiry. Jewish and other restricted burial grounds have their own visiting arrangements.
Municipal
Public cemeteries managed by Hamburger Friedhöfe AöR and Hamburg’s borough administrations.
Church
Protestant, Catholic, Mennonite and Orthodox cemeteries and churchyards.
Jewish
Jewish burial grounds with separate entrances and visiting arrangements.
Historic
Historic burial sites, surviving churchyards and former cemetery grounds.
War cemetery
Separate war cemeteries; burial plots within larger grounds remain part of those cemeteries.
